The citation counts displayed on Publons are the number of citations a publication has received from the Web of Science Core Collection.

Here are a few reasons why you may be missing citations:

1. Your publication is not indexed in the Web of Science

All citations are sourced from the Web of Science Core Collection only. Web of Science editorial standards make Web of Science citation counts relatively more authoritative than the citation counts of other databases with less comprehensive standards. It is that trustworthiness that makes Web of Science such a good fit with Publons.

A citation count of '-' indicates that we are unable to find a record of this paper in the Web of Science core collection. A citation count of '0' indicates that we have found that paper in Web of Science but that there are no citations recorded for it there.

If your publication is not indexed in the Web of Science, we are unable to retrieve citations for your publication.

If you believe your publication should be indexed (journal is indexed) but is not yet indexed in the Web of Science, you may request data corrections by the Web of Science using this form: https://support.clarivate.com/ScientificandAcademicResearch/s/datachanges?language=en_US

Please note that the Web of Science Core Collection only indexes Online First/advance articles for a few journals. Articles will usually be indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection once it is published in a standard issue of the journal.

2. Your publication record has not been linked to a corresponding Web of Science publication record

If your publication has a dash "-" for a citation count, this means the publication record on Publons has not been linked to any publication record indexed in Web of Science and thus we cannot display a citation count for this publication record.

If you know that your publication has been indexed in Web of Science, you can trigger an update by entering its DOI or Accession Number in the URL.

e.g. https://publons.com/publon/10.1038/NATURE12323 or

https://publons.com/publon/WOS:000321285600036

Note: If your publication is indexed in the Medline index, the Accession Number will be "MEDLINE:(PubMed ID)"

e.g. MEDLINE:123456

Alternatively, you may retrieve your Web of Science Core Collection citation counts by navigating to your Private Dashboard > Publications and clicking on the update button (shown below) in the citation field in line with the publication you'd like to retrieve citations for.

3. Your citation count is yet to be updated on Web of Science

If your publication is showing a citation count but you know there are more Web of Science Core Collection citations for your publication, you may submit a data change request here: https://support.clarivate.com/ScientificandAcademicResearch/s/datachanges?language=en_US

4. The citations you are missing are not from publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection

Please note that we currently only count citations that are from publications indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection.

A citation count of '-' indicates that we are unable to find a record of this paper in the Web of Science Core Collection. A citation count of '0' indicates that we have found that paper in Web of Science but that there are no citations recorded for it there. If you have missing citation counts in the Web of Science, we are unable to change this number on Publons either. However, you can request data corrections by the Web of Science using the above form.
